What is holding you back? Excuses? Something is preventing you from making the next step or it would be easy. When we are confronted with the reality of why we are not moving forward with our goals, we can quickly identify reasons why we are falling short. We convince ourselves that these excuses are justified and therefore unable to be conquered. One of the best ways to get ahead is to take stock on what is preventing you from taking the steps towards reaching your goals.

There are many excuses that can and will try to prevent us from making our next move. The reasons are different for everyone since I knew I was doing this article I asked several people what holds them back from being successful.

Here are a few of their responses:

1.  Procrastination: the inability to take action

2.  Fear: of success or failure

3.  Ignorance: when you lack the proper tools or know how to do it.

4.  Money: do not have to money to achieve the goal

5.  People: do not know the people that can help you achieve your goal.

The list that I shared is not meant to be an exhaustive list of what prevents us from moving forward, but I wanted you to get a glimpse of what real people are saying is holding them back from achieving their goals.

The reality is that we are more alike than different. We all have something that we are struggling with we just do not want the other person to know. The purpose of this article is to remove the barriers that hold us back by exposing them and giving a few tips to overcome these obstacles and use them to our advantage. I will use examples from the list above and show you how to use these barriers as stepping stones.

Barrier #5 People:

Start networking with people. Always carry your business cards and if you are not working carry a personal business card. When you go to any event try to at least meet between 3-5 new people by doing this you can add several people to your network. Try upgrading your friends, find people who are doing what you would like to do. Ask them tons of questions. Remember you are the company you keep. The same is true in this instance. Lastly, make sure you have a friend that will hold you accountable and challenge you to move forward and while you are at it find a friend that needs a mentor and be their mentor that way when you succeed you can bring someone along.

Barrier #4 Money:

Show me the money. The most common excuse I hear when I ask people, what is holding you back from going after your dreams, “Is I don’t have any money”. I would like to propose to you that “not having the money” is often not the case. We do have money; we are just choosing to spend it in other ways. If you have a dream to start your own business and need start up capital, you can save 10% of your income or you can create a business and not leave your full time position. Make your dream job your sides hustle until you gain enough business or capital to step out on your own. You don’t have to start off your business by taking out a loan.

Barrier: #3 Ignorance:

Knowledge is power. Unless you are living under a rock, information is now just a click away and more accessible than it ever was. If you don’t know how to run a business, use a drill, arrange flowers or need to learn how to cook you can find these answers in the world wide web or take a class at a near by junior college. You can intern or be an apprentice for someone that is doing what you want to do, I used to follow around and assist a minister at church before I got my own class and I worked for a large wire house for 10 years to learn the business before I opened my own business. Be ready to pay your dues.

Barrier #2 Fear:

False Evidence. 2 Timothy 1:7 states that “God has not given us the spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind.” But we still walk in fear. Fear and limitation are illusions. Some coined it right when they described F.E.A.R. as being False Evident Appearing Real. If fear is holding you back from obtaining your dreams, change your perspective. Think about what you have to gain and take a small step. John Maxwell states in his book, “The Difference Maker,” that only people that make mistakes get ahead. Don’t be a prisoner of fear. Take authority over it and go after your dreams or goals.

Barrier # 1 Procrastination:

Procrastination is defined as the inability to take action. It is not caused by anyone but ourselves. People do what they want to do. You have time to do everything else, so why not redistribute your time and start going after your dreams. My response to the procrastinators in the world is to “just do it”, set goals for yourself and go after them. Don’t let anything hold you back, not even yourself.

I hope now you can see that you can use your weakness as your strength. There should not be anything that will hold you back from achieving your goals.

Thank you for letting me speak into your life today. I hope you are encouraged and on your way to becoming a better you.
