Can you ReL8 to this?

Kanye West is at it again.  This time he moved from being IN the barrel with the rotten apples – straight to the bottom.  Before I go into what he is being scrutinized for, I want to remind you of a scenario a few years ago.  During the Katrina disaster in New Orleans, Kanye pathetically spoke about how Black people were being mistreated in the course of help being administered.  His last words were, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.”  Here’s a clip from an interview conducted by ABC’s Nightline regarding what he said.

For those of you who don’t know what Tourette Syndrome is, it is an inherited disorder of the nervous system, characterized by a variable expression of unwanted movements and noises (tics).  Vocal tics are actually manifestations of motor tics that involve the muscles required for vocalization. Simple vocal tics include stuttering, stammering, abnormal emphasis of part of a word or phrase, and inarticulate noises such as throat clearing, grunts, and high-pitched sounds. Complex vocal tics typically involve the involuntary expression of words. Perhaps the most striking example of this is coprolalia, the involuntary expression of obscene words or phrases, which occurs in fewer than one-third of people with Tourette syndrome. The involuntary echoing of the last word, phrase, sentence or sound vocalized by oneself (phalilalia) or of another person or sound in the environment (echolalia) are also classified as complex tics (medical jargon).  Now…this was the original comment made with Mike Myers standing by his side during a concert for hurricane relief.

Although sentimental, listen to what he says, “Um…I hate the way they portray us in the media…”  Granted, in context he was speaking of the idea that Black people were being portrayed as looters whereas our White brothers and sisters were seen as those looking for food to survive during that horrendous time in history.  But the point is, his initial comment was, “I hate the way THEY portray us in the media,” not to mention the fact that there were no displays of tics, but hey…who am I?

Now…fast forward to Sunday night (September 13, 2009) at the VMA’s.  I don’t know if you had a chance to see it or not but the evening started off with an incredible tribute to Michael Jackson.  Janet even came out and performed alongside her brothers video image.  It was fly.  The host got everyone revved up for an eventful evening with stellar performances and more MJ respect.  Then the first award winner was announced for the “Best Female Video.”  In the running were Beyonce, Pink, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift.  The drum roll ensued and the award went to – take a look…

Now I ask…why was that necessary?  Why did Kanye West  feel it was his civic duty to destroy this young girls’ precious moment.   Taylor Swift won the award for “Best Female Video” fair and square.  It doesn’t matter who WE think should have earned the coveted moon man, the point is…she won it.  And it was her turn to shine.  She will NEVER have another first time to win a VMA award again.  Kanye has been issued a number of trophies.  And I’m sure there have been times where people wanted to snatch him from the stage due to his arrogance but they didn’t.  So why was it necessary for him to ruin this first moment for Taylor Swift.  *SMH*  Isn’t this the poor portrayal of Black people that he spoke of years ago?  Was that the baby Tourette Syndrome rearing its ugly little head through the lips of THE most arrogant entertainer since Muhammad Ali – because you know Ali was a major trash talker.   I contend that if that had been a Black girl, he wouldn’t have dared.   Thank God for Beyonce who came along (after winning Best Video Of the Year) to invite Taylor Swift back out to, “Have her moment.”  What a class act.

Anywho…baby Tourette’s…undiagnosed?!  Whatever!!  If Kanye really does have Tourette Syndrome, he needs to get help right away.  Admittedly, I don’t know him personally – if I did, I would use the Social Worker in me to encourage him to seek a professional.  I have never seen him display any nervous tics with his body in public.  The only thing I have seen him do is tick people off.  So without any formal diagnosis, heres’ my prescription for Mr. West.  I think he just  needs to put a bib on, suck up a dose of his own medicine and eat a slice of humble pie.  That would shut all of this baby-wanna be-Tourettes down.  This dude needs to learn how to, “Let [his] conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that [he] may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:6 but that would mean getting himself right with Christ.  The community has been very tender with him for many reasons.  How quickly we forget.  What a jerk!

A little more about Tourette Syndrome:

According to wikipedia, the principal symptoms of Tourette syndrome include simple and complex motor and vocal tics. Simple motor tics are characterized by brief muscle contractions of one or more limited muscle groups. An eye twitch is an example of a simple motor tic. Complex motor tics tend to appear more complicated and purposeful than simple tics, and involve coordinated contractions of several muscle groups. Some examples of complex motor tics include the act of hitting oneself and jumping. Copropraxia, the involuntary display of unacceptable/obscene gestures; and echopraxia, the imitation of the movement of another individual, are other examples of complex motor tics.
