Can You Rel8 to this?

According to the Atlanta Associate Press, 1 out of 10 people get in the car after binge drinking!  Scary!!  Check out the DEATH CLOCK – the total drunk driving deaths in the US thus far.  NOTE:  When I began writing, the number was at 8904:

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that alcohol use by persons under age 21 years is a major public health problem. Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs. Although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States. More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks. On average, underage drinkers consume more drinks per drinking occasion than adult drinkers. In 2005, there were more than 145,000 emergency rooms visits by youth 12 to 20 years for injuries and other conditions linked to alcohol.

After watching this video on You Tube, I then read the comments.  Some of the responses alluded to the fact that if you “train” your kids right they won’t give in to peer pressure and “If alcohol is this dangerous, why is it legal and why is weed illegal.”

I’ve never been a weed smoker, nor have I indulged in alcohol consumption and I don’t think I have to  in order to know that I don’t ever want to.  I don’t frown upon those who like a glass of wine here and there but to be honest with you, I have watched many of my family members drink themselves to death, so the thought of consuming such a beverage was never really appetizing to me.  I take the Bible literally when it speaks of, “Be not DRUNK with wine but be filled with the Spirit,” (Ephesians 5:18).  That makes natural sense to me.  The Spirit of God is a force within us that governs our every move to do what is going to bring us life.  Alcoholic spirits have the potential of leading us toward death.  When I thought of it in those terms, it was clear whose Spirit I’d prefer being consumed by.   Needless to say, I have seen binge drinking take place with many people I know.  I was embarrassed for them at the aftermath.  It was always a contest of who didn’t think they were THAT buzzed after taking shots of hard liquor.

  • More than 100 people per day are admitted to the hospital in England for alcoholic liver disease.
  • Alcoholism can increase the risk for certain cancers, especially those of the throat, voice box (larynx), liver, colon, kidneys, rectum, and the esophagus.  Excessive drinking can also cause immune system problems, brain damage, harm to the fetus during pregnancy, and cirrhosis of the liver.
  • Approximately 43% of American adults have had a child, parent, sibling or spouse who is or was an alcoholic.
  • 6.6 million American children under the age of 18 live in homes with at least one alcoholic parent.
  • More than one-half of American adults have a close family member who has or has had

    alcohol addiction.

  • More than seven percent of the population ages 18 years and older — nearly 13.8 million Americans — have problems with drinking, including 8.1 million people who suffer from

Here’s my underlying thought…if you are a binge drinker, you’re not always drunk.  At some point, you can make a sound decision before the party starts.  If you feel the need to wild-out, do us all a favor and pass the keys to someone who is sober.  In that way, you can go home and sleep it off and a life or two is spared because of your responsible choice.  I’m just saying…
