A private funeral for rap legend Heavy D will be held at a historic black Baptist church in a northern suburb of New York City. Grace Baptist Church of Mount Vernon announced Friday that the funeral for Heavy D had been scheduled for Nov. 18. Heavy D performed at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards in October 2011.
It was his first live performance in 15 years. Myers died on November 8, 2011 in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 44. He collapsed outside his Beverly Hills home and was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.It has been reported that his death was due to respiratory distress and that no foul play was involved. Heavy D’s last public appearance and performance was in the movie Tower Heist, which premiered only 4 days before his death.
In the year of 1888, “five Negro Baptist women, with great faith and courage, organized the Grace Baptist Mission.” For over one hundred years, Grace Baptist Church of Mount Vernon, New York, has stood as joyous hymn to the glory of God and to the endurance of the human spirit. As the oldest Black Church in Mount Vernon, our church has been the fountainhead from which almost all Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal and Episcopalian Churches have flowed. Furthermore, other social, economic and health institutions of the Black community in Mount Vernon have been historically rooted in Grace Baptist Church.
The funeral for rap legend Heavy D will be held on Friday, November 18 at 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church of Mount Vernon, New York with Senior Pastor Reverend Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson delivering the eulogy, the church announced in a news release.
The viewing for the rapper, whose real name is Dwight Myers, will be held on Thursday at the church, noon to 6 p.m. ET.
