Dr. Drew Pinsky invited James  Debarge, Bunny Debarge and Randy Debarge onto their show to discuss in raw honesty their drug addictions and  what their lives have degenerated into. Their highlights of numerous Billboard hits as “‘Rhythm of The Night, “I Like It” and “Love Me In a Special Way” gave them millions of fans but didn’t foretell the story of their tragic present.

Three of the five-member ’80s R&B group DeBarge spoke out about their family’s rise to fame and how they fought—and sometimes lost—the battle to stay clean and sober on “Dr. Drew’s Lifechangers,”.  The footage is heart-wrenching for those of us who remember this group at the height of their career. You just shake your head with sadness.

At one time they were the biggest act on the charts. The success became too much to manage. There were overwrought scenes of anguish and sadness.

In particular scene James discusses being saved by Michael Jackson:

James – …”One time I was on the roof of his (Michael J.) house…I was going to jump and everyone was losing it…”

Dr. Drew – “How did he stop you?”

James – “He was the only one NOT freaking out! He seemed to be familiar with my pain…he knew I needed someone to talk to so he was that ear. So we just talked all night and I forgot that I was even on the roof and that I was going to jump.”

Sister Bunny and brother Randy will appear on the two-part intervention special with their family.

Bunny still lives in Grand Rapids, while James and Randy DeBarge now reside in California.
