Legendary songwriter Nick Ashford – who penned some of music’s best known rock and soul classics with his wife – has died. He had been suffering from throat cancer and had undergone radiation treatment. How ironic that a man who’s voice was his trade should die of throat cancer. Nick and Valerie, Valerie and Nick, almost synonymous for over 40 years.
Their love gave voice to Tammi Terrel and Marvin Gaye in songs such as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “You’re All I Need To Get By”, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”. When I was growing up that’s how I learned about the expression of love and true friendship. It was from listening to those songs. Years later, they took their partnership to the opening of the “Sugar Bar”, a restaurant with fantastic food and great music. The love and legacy he leaves behind will live forever.
