In an exclusive Father’s Day essay for “People” magazine, the Commander-in-Chief said he never wants his children to wonder, like he did, what it would have been like if he had been a greater presence in their lives.

The president recalls just a handful of memories of his own father after the senior Obama left the family when his son was just two years old.

He says in his essay, “It is perhaps for this reason that fatherhood is so important to me, and why I’ve tried so hard to be there for my own children.”

The White House also launched fatherhood.gov, a site to share tips on parenting, fatherhood programs, and data about the role of fathers. He invited men to sign the “Fatherhood Pledge” acknowledging the importance of their role.
