How many times have you found yourself mindlessly picking at a pimple or just slapping some water on your face and calling it washed? While we all know that a good skin care regimen is a must, it’s easy to get into a rut and take a healthy, clear complexion for granted.
Here are five cardinal skin sins you might not know you’re breaking:
1. Washing Your Skin Too Much
It’s important to keep your skin clean, but washing it too much will only make your acne worse. Instead, shoot for twice is day: once in the morning and again at night before going to bed.
2. Scrubbing Your Skin Too Hard
All of your skin is delicate, but it’s particularly important to be gentle when removing daily grit and grime from your face. Using washcloths, loofahs or other exfoliates are okay as long as they aren’t too abrasive. And, if you have acne-prone skin, scrubbing too hard could make your breakouts worse. To keep your face blemish-free, use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water to rinse.
3. Not Cleaning Post-Workout
Sweating prevents your body from overheating from an intense workout or a day in the sun, but any of those benefits could be negated if you don’t properly remove perspiration after. Some research suggests that skipping a wash after a day in the sun or an intense workout could even lead to conditions like malaria. Yikes!
4. Picking at your skin and popping zits
As tempting as it is to just make that blemish be gone, popping a pimple is not a good look. Doing so can cause increased redness by squeezing the pus deeper into the skin and can even result in scarring. Instead, keep your hands off your face and let pimples go back down to size with the help of an anti-acne lotion or cream.
5. Eating Greasy Foods
Although french fries, fried chicken and mozzarella sticks don’t technically cause acne, they can make acne-prone skin worse because of the excess oil and grease that can get on your skin while eating them. Plus, you really are what you eat. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and naturally reflects whatever is going on in the inside. So, having a baked potato instead of those fries will lower that cholesterol and keep your skin clearer.
