Whether you consider yourself: a liberal or a conservative, a Democrat or a Republican, a Catholic or a Protestant, you owe it to your nation and to the world to pray for our President. We know that no person can come to power unless God allows it. No person can be in a position of authority without God’s permission. We honor God by respecting those he uses to shepherd us. (Romans 13:1-2). Therefore we are charged to pray fervently for our leaders, so that they can make right decisions that affect our nation and the world. So before you “put your mouth on” him, here are 5 things you can pray for President Barack Obama.

1. Pray that our President would fear the LORD.

We live in a time where fewer and fewer people respect the Lord. We cannot afford for our President to become one of them.

The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning (the chief and choice part) of Wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight and understanding. (Proverbs 9:10 – NLT)

2. Pray that God would continuously fill him with a spirit of wisdom.

With the multitude of decisions set before him everyday, our President needs Divine wisdom – not just human wisdom.

Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses. (Deuteronomy 34:9 – NIV)

3. Pray that he would walk in integrity.

Politicians are known for their duplicity. Our President should keep his promises, apologize when he is wrong, and hold to the same standard in private as he does in public. In short, his character should be exceptional.

The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. (Proverbs 11:3 – NIV)

4. Pray that the LORD would protect our President and the First Family from their enemies (both foreign and domestic) and give them peace.

It has been reported that more death threats have been leveled against President Barack Obama than against any President in the history of the United States. Our war is not against “flesh and blood.” Therefore our weapons must be supernatural.

God! Look! Enemies past counting! Enemies sprouting like mushrooms, mobs of them all around me, roaring their mockery: “Hah! No help for him from God!”

But you, God, shield me on all sides; You ground my feet, you lift my head high; With all my might I shout up to God, His answers thunder from the holy mountain.

I stretch myself out. I sleep. Then I’m up again-rested, tall and steady, fearless before the enemy mobs coming at me from all sides. (Psalm 3:1-6 – The Message)

5. Pray that our President’s marriage would thrive!

The foundation of any healthy family is a vibrant marriage. Despite all the demands of being President and First Lady, The Obamas’ still go on “date night,” y’all! Kudos to them. A love like theirs is an example to us all.

Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe.

Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. (Proverbs 5:18-19 – ESV)

This list is in no way comprehensive. What it is, however, is a good start. Regardless of how you may feel about our President, whether or not you agree with his politics, whether or not you voted for him, he is ours. We believers must cover him daily in prayer.

If you can think of other areas of prayer to add to this list, please post them along with scripture references in the “comments” box. We at Elev8 would love to hear from you.
