Stories like this are truly heartbreaking and show the downside of social media usage among teens. A 15 year-old tragically decided to commit suicide after a nude Snapchat video of her was leaked online.

The Daily Beast uncovers all of the sad details of the horrifying incident that claimed the life of 15 year-old Tovanna Holton of Tampa, Florida and it all centers around the popular social media app Snapchat.

The events that led to the suicide are described in disturbing detail:

Tampa mom Levon Holton-Teamer told WFLA that her daughter, Tovonna, was upset about the bullying before she killed herself Sunday, June 3.

Now, according to one friend, Tovonna’s ex-boyfriend got hold of the nude [Snapchat] recording and posted it on Twitter after they broke up.

The couple had been fighting the night before Tovonna died, longtime pal Christian Coyle-Watts told The Daily Beast, and broke up Sunday morning.

“Tovonna knew [her friend] posted the video, but Tovonna’s boyfriend posted it, trying to expose her in a derogatory way,” Coyle-Watts said. “He did it just because he knew he could, and it would hurt her feelings.”

Tovanna’s mother is still trying to find out exactly what caused things to escalate to such a horrible level for her daughter and is now going over prior conversations that they had shortly before she died. She states, “Tovonna would say, ‘Mommy, I owe them; I owe them’. I said, ‘What do you mean you owe them?’ I couldn’t understand what was wrong.”

A few hours later Tovonna’s mother found her in the bathroom with a gunshot wound to the head around 6 p.m. She apparently used her mother’s handgun to kill herself. Through tears, her mother told local news outlets that she tried and failed to get inside the bathroom. “The bathroom light was off so I tried to get in and I looked down and I saw the puddle of blood. I tried to apply the pressure, the pressure to her head. I tried to save her,” she said.

It has been uncovered that Tovonna had been the victim of bullying at school in the past and her mother was thinking of enrolling her in a new school in the fall. Spencer Pylant, a spokesman for the Pasco County School District, stated that “At this time, along with the family we’re mourning the loss of Tovonna Holton. We’re working with the Pasco sheriff’s office. We’ve turned everything over to them.”

There are no words to describe how heartbreaking this is, especially knowing that it could have been prevented. Hopefully the laws for cyber-bullying will become stricter in the future to prevent further lives lost.
